My hatred of the 90s has been well documented. (Hell, it was my dissertation.)
Now, I don’t want to get into the whys & whatfors at this juncture, but I’ll say this:
The 90s were a cultural shitpile, in my opinion. And when it comes to the EARLY 90s, even more so. Because like any decade, the 1st few years are like the previous decade’s backwash.
All that one-sidedness aside, I regret the amount of promise I felt when I originally heard this song.
There I was, an optimistic young man, working at MusicLand in Birmingham. I’d been disgusted with the Escape Clubs, the Bad Englishes & the Jive Bunny & The Mastermixers of the retail music world.
Then THIS happened. I felt confident that this would be the future of music. And in a few ways, it was.
But this is one more song that got swept under the rug of cultural history, thanks to horrible hair metal, rap rock & the grunge movement.
Most of all, I regret that I can’t remember the last time I heard this song. No radio play that I can recall since its heyday. Then there was today, when it popped in my head. And I remembered that maybe the 90s weren’t that bad after all.
